First Book Program

“Young Children: Priority One” is the International Kiwanis motto. With that in mind, the “First Book “Program was launched, in order to emphasize the importance of learning and enjoying reading at an early age. We start with the Kindergartners, as they are at varying degrees of readiness to learn to read; provide them with a choice of books and
young adults to read to them and write their name in their book. Because children now a days are bombarded with media images; what a nice thing to teach them; turn off the TV or video games and sit down and read a book with your mom, dad, aunt, uncle or grandma. This year we served over 200 kindergartners from Oregon Trail School District, letting them pick out a book and sending them home with a drink and snack bag. Over 12 Kiwanis volunteer hours and 17 Key Club volunteer hours were spent on this project.
